It is also called LAN and designed for small physical areas such as an office,group of buildings or a factory. LANs are used widely as it is easy to designand to troubleshoot. Personal computers and workstations are connected to eachother through LANs. We can use different types of topologies through LAN,these are Star, Ring, Bus, Tree etc.LAN can be a simple network like connecting two computers, to share files andnetwork among each other while it can also be as complex as interconnecting anentire building.LAN networks are also widely used to share resources like printers, sharedhard-drive etc.* * *
These are the systems in which every computer has a radio modem and antennawith which it can communicate with other systems. Wireless LANs are becomingincreasingly common in small offices and homes, where installing Ethernet isconsidered too much trouble. There is a standard for wireless LANs called IEEE802.11, which most systems implement and which is becoming very widespread.* * *

Functioning as a local network, WLANs use wireless network technology , suchas Wireless . Typically visible in the same types of applications as localarea networks, these types of networks do not require devices to use physicalcables to connect to the network.

With the help of WAN deviceslike Routers and Firewalls, computers in a LAN can communicate with other LAN.For internet connectivity, We usually use NAT (Network Address Translation) ona Firewall or Router.
3. Wireless Local Area Network (W-LAN)
I know you are familiar with this types of networks – Wireless Local AreaNetwork (W-LAN), is a Local Area Network or Wireless Computer Network, wheredevices are interconnected without an Ethernet (wired) connection. Here, twoor more computers are interconnected in such a way so that they can transmitdata over a wireless connection. All the devices are interconnected with thehelp of Wi-Fi technology. Here, for the interconnection, an Access Point(AP’s) use in replacement of network switch.

What is LAN (Local Area Network)?
A Local Area Network is a group of computers or peripheral devices connectedin a small geographic area such as a house, building, school, or office, etc.It is a widely used network for sharing hardware devices such as printers, andsoftware such as application programs or data. LANs are built with inexpensive networking and routing equipment such as hubs,network adapters, and Ethernet cables, etc. Various devices in a LAN areconnected to a central device called a Hub or Switch. The LAN can be installedsimultaneously in wired, wireless, or both forms. However, LAN typicallyrelies on wired connections for better speed and increased security.LANs are mostly installed on private IP addresses and do not involve heavyrouting. The LAN allows it to operate under the local domain and can becontrolled centrally. LAN involves either Ethernet or Token-ring technology.Ethernet is the most widely used LAN technology based on a star topology,while the token-ring is rarely seen.Before, LANs were capable of transferring the data with a speed ranging from 4to 16 megabits per second (Mbps). Nowadays, the speed lies between 100 to 1000Mbps, depending on the number of connections.
Wireless Local Area Network
A Wireless Local Area Network or WLAN is a network that is used to connectdifferent devices by using radio or infrared signals within a limited area.WLANs are established by using a device known as anAccess Point (AP)to the edge of the wired network.These APs are considered as the base stations for the wireless network.Wireless clients such as mobile devices, laptops, or fixed devices havingwireless adaptors can communicate with the AP for data transmission. The WLANsare usually established in home, school, or office building. It can be publicor private depending on the requirement.

LAN is a group of computers (as shown in Fig.1), that are connected in a smallarea such as building, home, etc. Through this type of network, users caneasily communicate with each other by sending and receiving messages. LAN isgenerally used for connecting two or more personal computers through somemedium such as twisted pair, coaxial cable etc. Through the number ofcomputers connected in a LAN is limited, the data is transferred at anextremely faster rate.fig.1
