Set up the Microsoft Authenticator app to send notifications


1. On the Additional security verification page, select Mobile app from the Step 1: How should we contact you area. 2. Select Receive notifications for verification from the How do you want to use the mobile app area, and then select Set up.The Configure mobile app page appears. 3. Open the Microsoft Authenticator app, select Add account from the Customize and control icon in the upper-right, and then select Work or school account.NoteIf this is the first time you’re setting up the Microsoft Authenticator app,you might receive a prompt asking whether to allow the app to access yourcamera (iOS) or to allow the app to take pictures and record video (Android).You must select Allow so the authenticator app can access your camera to takea picture of the QR code in the next step. If you don’t allow the camera, youcan still set up the authenticator app, but you’ll need to add the codeinformation manually. For information about how to add the code manually, seesee Manually add an account to the app. 4. Use your device’s camera to scan the QR code from the Configure mobile app screen on your computer, and then choose Next. 5. Return to your computer and the Additional security verification page, make sure you get the message that says your configuration was successful, and then select Next.The authenticator app will send a notification to your mobile device as atest. 6. On your mobile device, select Approve. 7. On your computer, add your mobile device phone number to the Step 3: In case you lose access to the mobile app area, and then select Next.We strongly suggest adding your mobile device phone number to act as a backupif you’re unable to access or use the mobile app for any reason. 8. From the Step 4: Keep using your existing applications area, copy the provided app password and paste it somewhere safe.NoteFor information about how to use the app password with your older apps, seeManage app passwords. You only need to use app passwords if you’re continuingto use older apps that don’t support two-factor verification. 9. Select Done.

Microsoft Authenticator is available for Android and iOS. MicrosoftAuthenticator is a account verification app that helps sign into yourMicrosoft account. Here’s the steps you need to follow to use the app: 1. Sign in to your account with your username and password. 2. Select Approve from the Microsoft Authenticator notification. 3. Use the Microsoft Authenticator app verification code to sign in to your account.

Method 6: Creating a New Microsoft Account


Sometimes, certain user data might be corrupted. This corrupt data caninterfere with certain elements of the operating system and prevent certainfeatures from working properly. Therefore, in this step, we will be creating anew Microsoft Account to fix this issue. For that: 1. Click on the “Start Menu” button and select the “Settings” icon. 2. Inside the settings, click on the “Accounts” button. Selecting “Accounts” from settings 3. Select the “Family & Other People” from the left pane and click on “Add someone Else to this PC“. Clicking on “Family & Other people” and selecting “Add someone else to thisPC” 4. Click on the “I don’t have this person’s sign in information” option and select the “Add a user without a Microsoft Account” setting. Clicking on the “Add without Microsoft account” option 5. Enter the credentials for the account you want to create and click on “Next“. 6. Once the account is created, click on the account and select the “Change account type” Option. Clicking on the “Change Account Type” option. 7. Click on the dropdown and select “Administrator” from the options. Selecting “Administrator” from the list 8. Click on “OK” and sign out of the current account. 9. Sign in to the new account, run the application and check to see if the issue persists.

Security vs password reset verification


Security info methods are used for both two-factor security verification andfor password reset. However, not all methods can be used for both.Method | Used for —|— Authenticator app | Two-factor verification and password reset authentication. Text messages | Two-factor verification and password reset authentication. Phone calls | Two-factor verification and password reset authentication. Security key | Two-factor verification and password reset authentication. Email account | Password reset authentication only. You’ll need to chooseanother method for two-factor verification. Security questions | Password reset authentication only. You’ll need to chooseanother method for two-factor verification.

Set up the Microsoft Authenticator app from the Security info page


Depending on your organization’s settings, you might be able to use anauthentication app as one of your security info methods. You aren’t requiredto use the Microsoft Authenticator app, and you can choose a different appduring the set up process. However, this article uses the MicrosoftAuthenticator app.ImportantIf you have setup Microsoft Authenticator app on 5 different devices or 5hardware tokens, you would not be able to setup a sixth one and may see thefollowing error message.You can’t setup Microsoft Authenticator because you already have fiveauthenticator apps or hardware tokens. Please contact your administrator todelete one of your authenticator apps or hardware tokens.

To set up the Microsoft Authenticator app


1. Sign in to your work or school account and then go to your https://myaccount.microsoft.com/ page. 2. Select Security info from the left navigation pane or from the link in the Security info block, and then select Add method from the Security info page. 3. On the Add a method page, select Authenticator app from the drop-down list, and then select Add. 4. On the Start by getting the app page, select Download now to download and install the Microsoft Authenticator app on your mobile device, and then select Next.For more information about how to download and install the app, see Downloadand install the Microsoft Authenticator app.NoteIf you want to use an authenticator app other than the Microsoft Authenticatorapp, select the I want to use a different authenticator app link.If your organization lets you choose a different method besides theauthenticator app, you can select the I want to set up a different methodlink. 5. Remain on the Set up your account page while you set up the Microsoft Authenticator app on your mobile device. 6. Open the Microsoft Authenticator app, select to allow notifications (if prompted), select Add account from the Customize and control icon on the upper-right, and then select Work or school account.NoteIf this is the first time you’re setting up the Microsoft Authenticator app,you might receive a prompt asking whether to allow the app to access yourcamera (iOS) or to allow the app to take pictures and record video (Android).You must select Allow so the authenticator app can access your camera to takea picture of the QR code in the next step. Scan the provided code with the Microsoft Authenticator app QR code reader, which appeared on your mobile device after you created your work or school account in Step 6.The authenticator app should successfully add your work or school accountwithout requiring any additional information from you. However, if the QR codereader can’t read the code, you can select the Can’t scan the QR code link andmanually enter the code and URL into the Microsoft Authenticator app. For moreinformation about manually adding a code, see Manually add an account to theapp. 9. Select Next on the Scan the QR code page on your computer.A notification is sent to the Microsoft Authenticator app on your mobiledevice, to test your account. 10. Approve the notification in the Microsoft Authenticator app, and then select Next.Your security info is updated to use the Microsoft Authenticator app bydefault to verify your identity when using two-step verification or passwordreset.

Delete your authenticator app from your security info methods


If you no longer want to use your authenticator app as a security info method,you can remove it from the Security info page. This works for allauthenticator apps, not just the Microsoft Authenticator app. After you deletethe app, you’ll have to go into the authenticator app on your mobile deviceand delete the account.ImportantIf you delete the authenticator app by mistake, there’s no way to undo it.You’ll have to add the authenticator app again, following the steps in the Setup the authenticator app section of this article.

To delete the authenticator app


1. On the Security info page, select the Delete link next to the Authenticator app. 2. Select Yes from the confirmation box to delete the authenticator app. After the authenticator app is deleted, it’s removed from your security info and it disappears from the Security info page. If the authenticator app is your default method, the default will change to another available method. 3. Open the authenticator app on your mobile device, select Edit accounts, and then delete your work or school account from the authenticator app.Your account is completely removed from the authenticator app for two-factorverification and password reset requests.

Change your default security info method


If you want the authenticator app to be the default method used when you sign-in to your work or school account using two-factor verification or forpassword reset requests, you can set it from the Security info page.

To change your default security info method


1. On the Security info page, select the Change link next to the Default sign-in method information. 2. Choose Microsoft Authenticator – notification from the drop-down list of available methods. If you’re not using the Microsoft Authenticator app, select the Authenticator app or hardware token option. 3. Select Confirm.The default method used for sign-in changes to the Microsoft Authenticatorapp.

Additional security info methods


You have additional options for how your organization contacts you to verifyyour identity, based on what’s you’re trying to do. The options include: * Mobile device text. Enter your mobile device number and get a text a code you’ll use for two-step verification or password reset. For step-by-step instructions about how to verify your identity with a text message (SMS), see Set up security info to use text messaging (SMS). * Mobile device or work phone call. Enter your mobile device number and get a phone call for two-step verification or password reset. For step-by-step instructions about how to verify your identity with a phone number, see Set up security info to use phone calls. * Security key. Register your Microsoft-compatible security key and use it along with a PIN for two-step verification or password reset. For step-by-step instructions about how to verify your identity with a security key, see Set up security info to use a security key. * Email address. Enter your work or school email address to get an email for password reset. This option isn’t available for two-step verification. For step-by-step instructions about how to set up your email, see Set up security info to use email. * Security questions. Answer some security questions created by your administrator for your organization. This option is only available for password reset and not for two-step verification. For step-by-step instructions about how to set up your security questions, see the Set up security info to use security questions article.NoteIf some of these options are missing, it’s most likely because yourorganization doesn’t allow those methods. If this is the case, you’ll need tochoose an available method or contact your administrator for more help.
