What is LAN or Local Area Network

LAN stands for Local Area Network. It covers a small area. Most LANs are used to connect computers in a singlebuilding or group of near buildings. A network contained within a relativelysmall area, such as a classroom, school, or single building, is commonlyreferred to as a local area network.Hundreds or thousands ofcomputers may be connected through LAN. LANs are used in office buildings, college or university campus etc.Local Area Networks can transfer dataat a very high speed. Data transmissionspeeds of LAN are 1 to 100 megabits per second.

1) LAN (Local Area Network):

LAN is a network that connects a small number of the system in a relativelyclose geographical area. E.g., a floor or nearby surrounding of a building.

Network vs. Internet

Parameter | Network | Internet —|—|— Connection | Connect the system using different parameters. | Connect networksacross the world. Connectivity | One entity has administrative rights to manage the network | Noentity controls the system. Amount | Hundreds or a few thousand number of PC, get linked at one time. |Millions of computers get linked at one time. Objective | To exchange data and collaborate with peers. | To get theknowledge and communicate over the Internet. Type | Local Area Network, Wide Area Network, Campus Area Network, and HomeArea Network. | World Wide Web.

Computer Networks and its types

Learn: What is Computer Network? In this article, we will also discuss aboutthe various types of computer Networks? Submitted by Abhishek Jain, on August 05, 2017Computer Network is a system of interconnected computers that enable thecomputers to communicate with each other and share their resources, data andapplications. The physical location of each computer is tailored to personaland organizational needs. A network may include only personal computers or amix of PCs, minis and mainframes spanning a particular geographical area.Computer networks that are commonly used today may be classified as follows: 1. Based on geographical area: 1. Local Area Networks (LANs) 2. Wide Area Networks(WANs) 3. Metropolitan Area Networks (MANs) 4. Personal Area Network (PAN) 2. Based on how computer nodes are used: 1. Client Server Networks (CSNs) 2. Peer-to-Peer Networks (PPNs) 3. Value-added Networks (VANs)

1) Local Area Network (LAN)

LAN is a group of computers (as shown in Fig.1), that are connected in a smallarea such as building, home, etc. Through this type of network, users caneasily communicate with each other by sending and receiving messages. LAN isgenerally used for connecting two or more personal computers through somemedium such as twisted pair, coaxial cable etc. Through the number ofcomputers connected in a LAN is limited, the data is transferred at anextremely faster rate.fig.1

2) Local Area Network (LAN)

A Local Area Network or LAN as it’s commonly known is a network that connectsdevices usually in the same building or local area. This could be computers orother devices that are within an office building, which are connected togetherto share resources. Most people make use of this network type to share files and other business-related documents in an organization. A router is often used when multipleLocal Area Networks need to be connected to each other. A LAN is probably themost commonly used computer network nowadays. A major component of a LANnetwork is a Layer2 Ethernet Switch which provides the actual communicationbetween devices.

10) System Area Network

A System Area Network is a network that is designed to work in parallelcomputing environments; it connects computers that are in a High PerformanceComputing setting. These are often used where high processing is needed.Computer clusters make use of System Area Networks to achieve connectivity. The major difference here is the distance in between the computers on thenetwork, which is often a short distance.WAN Tutorial – Basic WAN Switching Concept ExplainedThis tutorial explains basic concepts of WAN Networking including WANSwitching (Circuit, Cell and Packet) and WAN Terminology (CPE, DP, Local Loop,CO, Toll network, CSU, DSU, DTE, DCE, HDLC, PPP, PPPoE, ISDN, LAPD, LAPB,Frame Relay, MPLS, ATM, DSL, Cable, Synchronous and Asynchronous connection)in detail.

Types of Computer Network

Generally there are three types of computer networks based on their size , itsownership , distance it covers and its physical structure . 1. Local Area Network (LAN) 2. Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) 3. Wide area network (WAN)

Computer Network Types

A computer network is a group of computers linked to each other that enablesthe computer to communicate with another computer and share their resources, data, and applications.A computer network can be categorized by their size. A computer network ismainly of four types: * LAN(Local Area Network) * PAN(Personal Area Network) * MAN(Metropolitan Area Network) * WAN(Wide Area Network)* * *

LAN(Local Area Network)

* Local Area Network is a group of computers connected to each other in a small area such as building, office. * LAN is used for connecting two or more personal computers through a communication medium such as twisted pair, coaxial cable, etc. * It is less costly as it is built with inexpensive hardware such as hubs, network adapters, and ethernet cables. * The data is transferred at an extremely faster rate in Local Area Network. * Local Area Network provides higher security.* * *
