What is LAN or Local Area Network


LAN stands for Local Area Network. It covers a small area. Most LANs are used to connect computers in a singlebuilding or group of near buildings. A network contained within a relativelysmall area, such as a classroom, school, or single building, is commonlyreferred to as a local area network.Hundreds or thousands ofcomputers may be connected through LAN. 1) Local Area Network (LAN)


LAN is a group of computers (as shown in Fig.1), that are connected in a smallarea such as building, home, etc. Through this type of network, users caneasily communicate with each other by sending and receiving messages. LAN isgenerally used for connecting two or more personal computers through somemedium such as twisted pair, coaxial cable etc. Through the number ofcomputers connected in a LAN is limited, the data is transferred at anextremely faster rate.fig.1

What is a computer network?


“A computer network is a group of two or more computers linked together forexchanging information, data, or resources.”A simple computer network can be established from two computers while acomplex computer network can be established from thousands or millions ofcomputers.

Types of Computer Networks


According to the size, distance, and structure, a computer network can bemainly classified into four types:•PAN (Personal Area Network)•LAN (Local Area Network)•MAN (Metropolitan Area Network)•WAN (Wide Area Network)Apart from the mentioned networks, there are some other networks that we havealso explained below.Let’s understand all of these networks in details:

What is LAN (Local Area Network)?


A Local Area Network is a group of computers or peripheral devices connectedin a small geographic area such as a house, building, school, or office, etc.It is a widely used network for sharing hardware devices such as printers, andsoftware such as application programs or data. LANs are built with inexpensive networking and routing equipment such as hubs,network adapters, and Ethernet cables, etc. Various devices in a LAN areconnected to a central device called a Hub or Switch. The LAN can be installedsimultaneously in wired, wireless, or both forms. However, LAN typicallyrelies on wired connections for better speed and increased security.LANs are mostly installed on private IP addresses and do not involve heavyrouting. The LAN allows it to operate under the local domain and can becontrolled centrally. LAN involves either Ethernet or Token-ring technology.Ethernet is the most widely used LAN technology based on a star topology,while the token-ring is rarely seen.Before, LANs were capable of transferring the data with a speed ranging from 4to 16 megabits per second (Mbps). Nowadays, the speed lies between 100 to 1000Mbps, depending on the number of connections.

Local Area Network (LAN)


A wireless LAN or WLAN is a wireless Local Area Network, which is the linkingof two or more computers without using wires. It uses radio communication toaccomplish the same functionality that a wired LAN has. WLAN utilizes spread-spectrum technology based on radio waves to enable communication betweendevices in a limited area, also known as the basic service set. This givesusers the mobility to move around within a broad coverage area and still beconnected to the network. * IEEE 802.11: IEEE 802.11, the Wi-Fi standard, denotes a set of Wireless LAN/WLAN standards developed by working group 11 of the IEEE LAN/MAN Standards Committee (IEEE 802). The 802.11 family currently includes six over-the-air modulation techniques that all use the same protocol. Types of Computer Network


Generally there are three types of computer networks based on their size , itsownership , distance it covers and its physical structure . 1. Local Area Network (LAN) 2. Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) 3. Wide area network (WAN)

1. Local Area Network (LAN)


LAN is a communication network used by a single building or organization overa limited distance. The network enables the user to share information andresources. A LAN required that the particular workstation should be physicallyjoint together by cabling and that some network software is on theworkstation. In addition of size, LAN stand apart from other types of networks by theirtransmission media and topology. In general a given LAN uses only onetype oftransmission medium. The most common LAN topologies are Bus, Ring and Star.The data transmission speed in LAN is up to 10 Mbps. LAN uses either Ethernetor Token-ring technology. Types of Local Area Network (LAN): –There are two different types of LAN: 1. Wired LAN: – wired LAN fixed wiring such as twisted pair or coaxial coaxial cable as the transmission. 2. Wireless LAN :– wireless LAN utilized radio or light waves. Examples of LAN are:ETHERNET –Xerox Corporation OMININET- Corvus System Advantages of LAN * LAN permits sharing of expensive hardware. * It provides high transmission rate to accommodate the needs of both people and equipment. * It provides very much security and fault tolerance capability. * LAN provides cost effective multiuser computer environment.Disadvantage of LAN * Installation and reconfiguration always requires technical and skilled man power. * Due to sharing of resource, sometime operation speed may be slow down.

LAN or Local Area Network: – It is a computer network that covers a small


geographical area like an office building, school, colleges etc., where wiredor wireless LAN network is used for connecting devices like PC’s, printers toInternet. Wired connection can be done through cables like twisted pair wire,co-axial or optical fiber cable for speed data transmission. SimilarlyWireless LAN network is performed through radio wave technology or Infraredcommunication that helps to connect multiple devices within an area. Ethernetor IEEE 802.11LAN is used for connecting a device to a router or modem forspeed data transmission. The five main components of LAN are networkingdevices like workstations, printers, servers that can be accessed by otherComputers, network communication devices like router, hub, and switches forconnectivity, NIC or Network Interface card, Cables as medium and a NetworkOS.
