4. Local area networks

One early solution to these problems was the creation of local area networks(LANs). Because they could connect all of the workstations, peripherals, terminals, and other devices in a single building, LANs made it possible forbusinesses using computer technology to efficiently share such things as filesand printers.Local area networks (LANs) consist of computers, network interface cards, networking media, network traffic control devices, and peripheral devices.LANs make it possible for businesses that use computer technology to share, efficiently, such items as files and printers, and to make possiblecommunications such as e-mail. They tie together: data, communications, computing, and file servers.LANs are designed to do the following:* operate within a limited geographic area* allow many users to access high-bandwidth media* provide full-time connectivity to local services* connect physically adjacent devicesThere are many online resources for gaining the most recent information onLANs. What is LAN or Local Area Network

LAN stands for Local Area Network. It covers a small area. Most LANs are used to connect computers in a singlebuilding or group of near buildings. A network contained within a relativelysmall area, such as a classroom, school, or single building, is commonlyreferred to as a local area network.Hundreds or thousands ofcomputers may be connected through LAN. LANs are used in office buildings, college or university campus etc.Local Area Networks can transfer dataat a very high speed. Data transmissionspeeds of LAN are 1 to 100 megabits per second.

1) Local Area Network (LAN)

LAN is a group of computers (as shown in Fig.1), that are connected in a smallarea such as building, home, etc. Through this type of network, users caneasily communicate with each other by sending and receiving messages. LAN isgenerally used for connecting two or more personal computers through somemedium such as twisted pair, coaxial cable etc. Through the number ofcomputers connected in a LAN is limited, the data is transferred at anextremely faster rate.fig.1

2.Local Network(LAN)

We are convinced that you have already heard of these types of networks –local networks are the most discussed networks, one of the most common, themost original and the simplest.Local networks connect groups of computers and low-voltage devices over shortdistances (in a building or between two or three buildings close to eachother) to share information and resources. Companies generally manage andmaintain local networks.Using routers, LANs can connect to wide area networks (WAN, explained below)to quickly and securely transfer data.

3. Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN)

Functioning as a local network, WLANs use wireless network technology , suchas Wireless . Typically visible in the same types of applications as localarea networks, these types of networks do not require devices to use physicalcables to connect to the network.

1. Local Area Network (LAN) :

A local area network or LAN consists of a computer network at a single site, typically an individual office building. A LAN is very useful for sharingresources, such as data storage and printers.LANs are typically used for single site where people need to share resourcesamong themselves but not with the rest of the outside world.Think of office building where everybody should be able to access files on acentral server or be able to point a document to one or more central printers. Those tasks should be easy for everybody working in the same office, but youwould not want somebody just walking outside to be able to send a document tothe printer from their cell phone! If a local area network, or LAN, isentirely wireless, it is referred to as a wireless local area network or WLAN.

2) Local Area Network (LAN)

A Local Area Network or LAN as it’s commonly known is a network that connectsdevices usually in the same building or local area. This could be computers orother devices that are within an office building, which are connected togetherto share resources. Most people make use of this network type to share files and other business-related documents in an organization. A router is often used when multipleLocal Area Networks need to be connected to each other. A LAN is probably themost commonly used computer network nowadays. A major component of a LANnetwork is a Layer2 Ethernet Switch which provides the actual communicationbetween devices.

Local Area Network (LAN) Types

By Edward TetzA WAN is a type of Local Area Network (LAN). A LAN is a private network thattypically is made up of a well-connected, reliable, and fast networkconnection. Alternatives on the LAN framework include CANs, MANs, and WANs.All three of these network options are illustrated below:

1. Local Area Network (LAN)

LAN is a communication network used by a single building or organization overa limited distance. The network enables the user to share information andresources. A LAN required that the particular workstation should be physicallyjoint together by cabling and that some network software is on theworkstation. In addition of size, LAN stand apart from other types of networks by theirtransmission media and topology. In general a given LAN uses only onetype oftransmission medium. The most common LAN topologies are Bus, Ring and Star. The data transmission speed in LAN is up to 10 Mbps. LAN uses either Ethernetor Token-ring technology. Types of Local Area Network (LAN): –There are two different types of LAN: 1. Wired LAN: – wired LAN fixed wiring such as twisted pair or coaxial coaxial cable as the transmission. 2. Wireless LAN :– wireless LAN utilized radio or light waves. Examples of LAN are:ETHERNET –Xerox Corporation OMININET- Corvus System Advantages of LAN * LAN permits sharing of expensive hardware. * It provides high transmission rate to accommodate the needs of both people and equipment. * It provides very much security and fault tolerance capability. * LAN provides cost effective multiuser computer environment.Disadvantage of LAN * Installation and reconfiguration always requires technical and skilled man power. * Due to sharing of resource, sometime operation speed may be slow down.

1. Local Area Network (LAN)

1. Local area network is a group of computers connected with each other in asmall places such as school, hospital, apartment etc. 2. LAN is secure because there is no outside connection with the local areanetwork thus the data which is shared is safe on the local area network andcan’t be accessed outside. 3. LAN due to their small size are considerably faster, their speed can rangeanywhere from 100 to 100Mbps. 4. LANs are not limited to wire connection, there is a new evolution to theLANs that allows local area network to work on a wireless connection.

LAN(Local Area Network)

* Local Area Network is a group of computers connected to each other in a small area such as building, office. * LAN is used for connecting two or more personal computers through a communication medium such as twisted pair, coaxial cable, etc. * It is less costly as it is built with inexpensive hardware such as hubs, network adapters, and ethernet cables. * The data is transferred at an extremely faster rate in Local Area Network. * Local Area Network provides higher security.* * *

Local Area Network:

Local Area Network (LAN) is a limited range of geographical barriers such as alaboratory, a school or building. In a typical LAN configuration, one of thecomputers used as file server file server that functions to keep all thesoftware that controls the network. All computers are connected to the serverfile known as a workstation. Computer workstation comprising a desktopcomputer specifications less than the server and also may have software on thedisk severity. Cable used to connect the LAN via network card installed oneach computer.Find out how UKEssays.com can help you!Our academic experts are ready and waiting to assist with any writing projectyou may have.
